Williamstown renovations
Renovating inside the walls of a heritage suburb
Williamstown home renovations start with the house you already have. The town was surveyed in 1837, and Victorian Places describes an "impressive range of heritage buildings" from the decades that followed, noting that by the 1960s the suburb was something of a heritage time capsule. In the 2021 Census, 30.2% of Williamstown's dwellings were semi-detached, row or terrace houses, more than double the Victorian figure of 13.9%. Narrow rooms, shared walls and wet areas tucked at the back are what most renovation briefs here have to solve.
A renovation, as we use the word, reworks the rooms you have: kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, finishes and services, with walls opened up where the engineering allows. If you need more floor area or a second storey, that's an extension, and our Williamstown extensions page covers it.

"From the first meeting through to handover, RenoWorx made what we expected to be a stressful renovation feel completely manageable. The finish is exceptional — every detail considered, every trade-person professional. We could not recommend them more highly."
Sarah & James
Williamstown · Whole-home renovation
"The level of detail and the quality of the trades was clearly a step above. Our extension feels like it was always part of the original house."
"We interviewed four builders. RenoWorx were the only ones who actually listened. The kitchen is everything we hoped for."
What we deliver
Tailored to Williamstown.

Wet areas rebuilt from the subfloor up, waterproofed to AS 3740 and documented.
Laundries
A proper laundry room, or the bathroom and laundry merged into one planned wet area.
Opening up the back
Load-bearing walls replaced with engineered steel so kitchen, dining and living become one room.
Services renewed
Re-plumbing in older homes planned into the quote rather than found halfway through.
Workmanship warranty

What the heritage overlay means for a renovation
Much of Williamstown sits under a heritage overlay, administered by Hobsons Bay City Council. Council's main interest is what the street sees: the facade, the original roof form, chimneys and the verandah. Work that stays inside the existing walls usually touches far less of that than an extension does, but anything visible from the street can still need planning consent as well as a building permit. We check your property's controls before design and lodge any permits ourselves. For more on what council looks for, read our guide to heritage home renovations in Williamstown.
Home renovations in Williamstown terraces and cottages
Terraces and single-fronted cottages share walls, have narrow hallways and usually keep the bathroom and laundry at the rear. We plan the kitchen and wet areas together so the plumbing is reworked once, combine the bathroom and laundry where that frees up room for a walk-in shower, and use wall-hung joinery to keep floor space clear. Where a terrace shares a party wall with the house next door, we record its condition before any work starts.
Living at home while we work
Some homes can be staged so you stay in while we work room by room; for most full renovations you'll want to be out for the messiest stages. We'll tell you which applies when we quote, give you a written program before we start, and update you every week once we're on site.
