Newport home renovations rarely look alike, because the suburb wasn't built all at once. Victorian Places traces the first subdivisions to the railway workshops of the mid-1880s, then a garden-city estate in the 1920s, and notes that housing to the west of the shopping centre wasn't finished until after the Second World War. A turn-of-the-century weatherboard near the old workshops and a 1950s brick home in the west need very different things from a new kitchen or bathroom.
In the older homes, the surprises are usually below the boards. We allow for likely re-plumbing in the quote, inspect the bearers once the old floor is up, and agree any further repairs in writing before they happen.

In post-war homes the space is usually there and it's the layout that lets them down, so moving a wall or folding a separate toilet into the bathroom does most of the work. On our whole-home renovation in Newport, that meant restoring the period entry and building an entirely new kitchen and living zone at the rear, finished over seven months.
